Friday 10:15 - 11:15
My blog is a bit rough - but I wanted to get the info out right away and see if there were any questions looking for more info.
This session was put together in response to surveys asking for more information about school and library partnerships. One of the panel members was a school librarian and former teacher. The big take aways from this panel member was:
To speak the "language" -
* market to teachers / schools using common core / STEM
* market to principals / administrators (required community partnerships)
Know who to contact -
* administrators / support staff like secretaries/ libraries / teachers
The other panel presenter was from Hayward Library running a grant funded after school tutoring program. The feedback from the community was asking for help with homework. Started with a "Promise" grant from Obama based on neighborhood / school status.
This program has grown into serving over 3,000 kids at 10 sites. The program is run by volunteers (Chabot, CSUEB), agreements have been created with the schools, and stipends are even offered to teaching students.
Chrome books are available to students, schools supplies (like paper, scientific calculators), tutor based table where students can rotate. Students are registered into program so they can be tracked / data.
Four community partners working together on grants - Hayward Library, Chabot College, CSU EB (East Bay in Hayward), and school system. Using *LOTS* of data - school tests scores, pre and post surveys, daily tutoring stats, food service and attendance records - all the data helped to track the program's success and helped to make the program very attractive for grants.
Interested in exploring further data from Hayward site, this sounds familiar to Back-Basics, but on a larger scale. We definitely have interest from the community, but need to follow up on more information and see if something like this was possible without their level of partners / funding,
