Read for the Win!

Yesterday I got to be Wess Garcia and attend the 2016 CA Summer Reading Program Read for the Win Pre-conference monitoring the video for iRead and learning in the process.  It was filled with an overwhelming amount of information which they thankfully said primarily came from the SRP Resource Guide that iRead sells.

Remember that 1 million readers challenge we did over the summer?  The results are in.  Last year, there were 789,387 participants statewide, indicating an 8% increase in statewide participation over 2014.  Although no 1 million, still a respectable turnout, and growing.

Some highlights and some of my favorite ideas that came out of the session:

Early Literacy Connections
Interactive Displays

  • Gold Medal and Flag Matches -- Have kids count gold medals to match the display; Have kids match flags to the country it belongs to
  • Create textured olympic rings by gluing anything and everything on (feathers, misfit toys that don't have a home, etc.)
  • Sight Word Movement Match - Have the kids match pictures of run, jump, swim, kick, etc. or have them pick a card and do that movement
  • Shadow Match - Put a picture of an image on the wall and then create a shadow out of black felt - have the kids match
Program Ideas
  • Toddler Triathalon
    • Swimming -- Water play + make swim goggles out of chenille stems
    • Running -- Teach kids how to tie shoes, let them run around

  • Teddy Bear Olympics
    • Registration - Create a bib number for your stuffed animal
    • Events could include Froggy Long Jump, Volleyball, Obstacle Course
    • Closing ceremonies - make your own torch, flag, medals
  • Life size games -- Hi-Ho Cherry-O - make trees with velcro, giant dice out of large boxes/styrofoam

Adult SRP

  • Partner with places adults congregate - Senior Centers, Parks, Universities, City Council, Library Board, restauraunts/bars
  • In house marketing -- put quarter sheets advertising the program into hold books and books in browsing/new collections
  • Teens vs. Seniors Wii Tournament
  • Online Registration helps get more adults (I'm thinking maybe we have the reg form on an iPad that connects to just a google form?)
  • End of summer display -- everyone chooses their favorite book
Teen SRP
  • 8-bit Perlet Bead Art (I got some hands on practice -- I haven't done these since I was a kid!)

  • Make your own mini foosball table w/a shoebox, clothespins, & dowels

Children & Tweens
  • Teddy Bear Sleepaway sports camp (instead of the stuffed animals doing library things, they do sportsy things)
  • Ring toss -- create your own with paper towel rolls
  • Personalized sports flags, etc.
  • Rockin' Recess -- Recess in the library!  Play with parachutes, pool noodles, and other fun stuff
  • Hula Hoop Contest

Breakout Session:  Summer Learning Program
  • Program is the incentive
  • Expand the brand of libraries
  • Encourage patrons & families to go to other educational places such as museums, parks, etc.
  • Expand SRP activities (kind of like how we did for adult this past summer)
  • Some resources to look at for the future:
    • summerlearning.org
    • summerlearners.org
    • SFPL's Summer Stride
And last, but not least, some of the artwork for Read for the Win!
